There has been a bit of bird ID discussion on the Aus Teacher Librarian mailing
list today. If you ever wanted a decent justification for getting HANZAB for
your school library, this is it!

PS Someone emailed the author and he confessed that the bird started out as a
Bird of Paradise, but then his imagination ran away with it. Hmmm ... I think
I've heard that line before!

Not sure if she is based on a real bird but you could use a range of NF texts
and ask them if they can find her in any of them. (Hunt for Pheobe)

Subject: [OZTL_NET] QUERY: Feathers For Phoebe by Rod Clement
Hi all,
I'm wondering if anyone knows what sort of "forest" bird Phoebe was, or was
based on? As you'd remember, she's small, grey and has a tiny pink
crest.... before Zelda's opulent makeover. I'm wanting to do a lesson on
the difference between fiction and non-fiction, for my Year 1's, and wanted
to find a non-fiction text about her species, if she's based on (or close
to) a real life bird. It'd be a great way to compare and contrast the
features of each type of book.
With thanks for any thoughts,
