That was my understanding too, Chris. According to the Qld Department of
Environment and Resource Management publication, "National recovery plan for
the Buff-breasted Button-quail Turnix olivii": "Despite considerable search
effort, the lack of knowledge regarding the buff-breasted button-quail is
substantial (e.g. there are no photographs of living specimens)" -

I must admit that I had though this to be almost an urban (or at least a
birding) myth!
It strikes me that to get the first photo of a living Buff-breasted
Button-quail should almost be the holy grail of bird photography in
Australia! I suppose that a photo of a Night Parrot would REALLY be the holy
grail, though...
