Just to add to Jim Smart's comments - currently there is a bridge being
replaced across a creek on Ash Island and it is not possible to access the
main pond system except via a circuitous back route which requires a key.
We will post a message to birding-aus when the bridge work is completed and
normal access becomes possible. I have no idea of the timing of the
completion of the work nor it seems does anybody else - so stay tuned for
when we can make an update.
Cheers

Subject: Access to Ash Island, Hunter Estuary, NSW
The following message posted on Hunterbirding by Paul Baird, President of
the Hunter Bird Observers
Club,
could be of interest to Birding-Aus readers:
Hi All,
Just a quick update re the access to birding sites on Ash Is. NPWS had
proposed a key system for the
gate on Milhams Rd and concerns were raised about this system. HBOC has been
working with NPWS and a
more flexible and workable system in now in operation. The gate will remain
open 24/7 except on the
infrequent occasions of very high tide when water floods the roads. When
this occurs and in the
interest of public safety, the gate will be closed and explanatory signs
displayed. It is thought
that the frequency of road flooding will also be reduced as a result of
works that will raise the
level of the road in some places. This system will be monitored and
reassessed when NPWS puts
together its full Plan of Management for the newly gazetted Hunter Wetlands
National Park.
Cheers,
Paul
