Between 3.30 and 3.45pm on 17/01/11 at Levenstrath (locality) near Grafton
two adult Buff banded Rail and at least nine young were scratching in the
mulch outside the window. They scattered into an adjoining paddock when I
moved but I followed them and counted six young in one group and at least
three more in another group. All chicks still covered with down and
appeared to be same age. The adults commenced calling and the larger group
of chicks moved to them and they then joined the smaller group of chicks and
slowly moved away feeding.
On 14/01/11 on Black Swan Drive Coutts Crossing there was local flooding and
four adult Buff banded Rail and a number of well developed young feeding on
insects on the bitumen with some young clambering over the grass in the
flooded table drain. They continued to feed as they moved along the side of
the stationary car which had the engine running.
