La Nina may be having a dramatic effect on seabirds in tropical Australian
waters. Below I give just a few examples which may support that theory.
Our trips to Ashmore in October and November encountered far fewer
Matsudaira's Storm-Petrels and Bulwer's Petrels than usual but more Hutton's
Shearwaters.
Arabian Shearwaters appeared but I wonder if this is a one-off & that they
will disperse when this influence dies.
Some seabirds breeding on Christmas Island are dramatically reduced, notably
Abbott's Boobies, Brown Boobies, Christmas & Great Frigatebirds & Common
Noddies (there was just one in the port area whereas usually 200). White
Terns are not breeding on Cocos and are virtually absent.
