Hello all,
Received news last night of the latest sightings from Australia's
Cocos-keeling Islands from Mike Carter, Tony Palliser and Frank O'Connor, who
are there till Tuesday.
The exceptional run of rarities is continuing on from our recent December
visit. Its nice to see the birds have stayed on the islands!
HODGSON'S HAWK CUCKOO- Two live birds have now been located, one on West Island
and another near the Clunies-ross Mansion on Home Island.
YELLOW BITTERN - (2)
CINNAMON BITTERN - (1) Home Island
PIED HARRIER - (1) - A raptor, possibly this species was seen on West Island.
COMMON SNIPE- (1) A snipe possibly this species was seen amongst 33 Pin-tailed
Snipe on West Island. They will try and ID this bird over the next few days.
WATERCOCK - (4) Four seen on West Island.
LARGE-HAWK CUCKOO - (1) Seen flying around quarantine station.
CHINESE GOSHAWK - (1) still present.
JAPANESE SPARROWHAWK (1) Possibly seen.
COMMON TEAL - (1) still present.
RED-COLLARED DOVE - (1) Still present at Christmas Island Rubbish Tip.
I have two vacancies remaining for a trip to Cocos and Christmas Islands in
March.
Cheers
Richard Baxter
