I had this problem with Indian Mynahs many years ago. Cut a circle of wire
mesh (bird-wire?) slightly larger than the internal diameter of the roller.
Cut a slit from the outside to the centre and cut a hole to fit over the
shaft. Wriggle it over the shaft and spring it into place just inside the
end of the roller.
