I know in the EXIF data in my photos, it states how far the object of focus is from the camera - might be a way of finding out if someone's telling porkies about how close they were to a bird... On BirdForum, they sometimes have 'name and shame' threads with very illustrative photos of some people taking the mick with rare or threatened birds by getting far too close for a photo.
