That has happened in certain locations in SE Asia.

If it's any help, Simon, I'd say that the market rate for premium guided and accommodated birding trips would probably be about $500 per person per day in Australia - using the rates twitchers pay to go to Ashmore Reef etc as a guide.

I suppose the fee could be structured to have a bonus payable if the clients get to see the parrots [$1500+ is a lot to pay for a guided drip]. However that might motivate planted aviary birds.

Dear Birding-aussies,

The Central Land Council is considering permitting birders access to the
breeding area for Princess Parrots, off the Mereenie Loop road near
Alice Springs. At this stage, it is being considered in return for a
fee, paid to the local community. This would be on top of guiding fees
to enter the land. Negotiation is ongoing and there is meeting today to
discuss the options further.

At this stage, our understanding is that the total cost for a single day
visit, including access to the site, contribution to the local owners,
plus transport, guide and overnight at Kings Canyon would be in the
region of $1,650.00 - $1,900.00 per person.

It would be extremely helpful to receive your response to this
proposal, so that those involved in the arrangements, can present informed feedback to the CLC. Perhaps you could answer the following four questions, briefly:

1. Is this price reasonable?

2. Would you consider going in the next 3 weeks?

3. If this price is not reasonable, what would you expect / be willing to pay?

4. Given your answer to (3), would you consider putting a deposit down for a trip this year or next year?

NOTE - RESPONSES NEED TO BE RECEIVED, IDEALLY, BY MIDDAY TODAY. If you can't manage that, send the responses anyway.

Please email your responses to and we will collate and
forward these to the parties who are in discussion with CLC.

Kind regards,

Simon.
