I was on Tiritiri in 2008 and heard a wonderful story about their
attempt to introduce Tomtits to the island. About 50 birds were
trapped in reserves in the Auckland area and realeased on the island.
They disappeared immediately, but within a few days had reappeared in
the places they were trapped (they were recognised by the leg bands).

This would have involved either a 2km hop to the mainland and a
laborious cross-country trip back to their home forests, or a long
(30km) flight over the sea towards Auckland if they flew back in a
straight line.
