Western Treatment Plant Water Levels

Melbourne Water have recently advised the Western Treatment Plant Biodiversity
and Conservation Committee that people have been interfering with water levels
in some of the conservation lagoons at the facility.

Water levels in lagoons are carefully controlled to a monthly plan prepared by
the Conservation and Environment personnel after consultation with members of
BCAC. The operations people have been extremely cooperative in implementing, as
far as is practical, these requirements, which are designed to have the suite
of conservation lagoons in the optimum condition for waders throughout the year.

Water levels are generally controlled by the placement of boards in the inlet
and outlet ducts. It is these boards which have been interfered with several
times in recent months.

The enormous goodwill of Melbourne Water in allowing birdwatchers access to the
WTP, and in setting aside lagoons for the benefit of waders (and bird
watchers), will be prejudiced if this interference does not cease. It is not
proven that bird watchers have been responsible for these actions but Melbourne
Water find it hard to imagine who else might have been involved.

Would all BA members visiting the WTP please make sure not to interfere in any
way with water level controls. If you see anyone else doing so then please
speak to them and also advise Melbourne Water. If anything appears amiss with
water level control (or with stock) please contact Melbourne Water.

Thank you,

Clive Minton

BA representative on the WTP Biodiversity and Conservation Committee
