Intermediate Egret, Spotless Crake, Wood Sandpiper &
Olive-backed Oriole Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
Intermediate Egrets are occasionally reported for the WTP, but we rarely
see them (we have only about 3 records in past 40 years and no recent
records). One was seen today in the 95 E conservation pond which then
flew to the 35E conservation pond). Other unusual species - Spotless
Crake, Olive-backed Oriole & Dusky Woodswallow. Our first Sharp-tailed
Sandpiper (very late due to floods in northern parts?) and the 2 Wood
Sandpipers reported earlier. Double-banded Plover (2) still present
(thanks Fiona & Jon).
John Barkla & Fred Smith

Kelp Gull Red Rocks look-out, west of Point Addis
A single Kelp Gull flew straight past our vision as I was sea watching
with an Angair group. We had great views and were able to compair size
difference as 10 minutes later 2 Juv pacific gulls showing distinctive
black marking across tail. The Kelp gull was slightly smaller and had an
all white tail. Also seen was Cresent HE, Peregrine Falcon, Tree
Martins, and female Golden Whistlers.

Fairy Martins, Curlew Sandpiper, Tree Martins, Fairy Terns
Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
Big flock of Fairy Martins has arrived with a few Tree Martins mixed in.
They have wasted no time and are building nests in many of the drainage
ditch tunnels along the way down to Borrow pits. Also a couple of newly
arrived Curlew Sandpipers mixed in with Red-necked Stints and Fairy
Terns on rocks near end of Beach Rd (boat ramp).
Paul Randall (wingsonwire.com)

Scarlet Honeyeater Koonung Creek Reserve, Mont Albert North
A few birds have been present continuously since May or earlier.
Apparently feeding mainly on the nectar of numerous Grey Mistletoe
(Amyema quandang); also on Drooping Mistletoe (A. pendula) which is far
less common at this location. Both mistletoes flower for a long time and
the commencement of flowering of individual plants can vary
considerably. Additionally, from a month or so ago, some trees of Yellow
Box and Manna Gum have been flowering. Sufficient nectar from various
species of eucalypts (inc. River Red Gum, Swamp Gum) could see the birds
remain into summer or beyond.
Knud and Carl Hansen

Tue 7 Sep Baillon's Crake Conservation Ponds, Western Treatment
Plant
Single Baillon's Crake seen in tall sedges near Wood Sandpiper spot at

pond later in the day.

A Rose Robin (spring migrant) was seen on the eadge of a flooded Barwon
River. Photographed eating a spider and an earwig. (among other flooded
out insects)
Peter Fuller

Brush Cuckoo Western Treatment Plant, Werribee
One Brush Cuckoo feeding on caterpillars at 29 Mile Road (extension from
Point Wilson Road) in plantation between Beach Road and concrete drain.
Also present at this location were Fan-tailed Cuckoo and Horsfield's
Bronze-cuckoo.
Maarten Hulzebosch

Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park (Chiltern)
Four, but possibly more birds in large flowering gum next to Greenhill
Dam; most banded but at least one unbanded wild bird. Observed them with
some very helpful local birders. Other birds of interest included an
Olive-backed Oriole, 2 Little Lorikeets, 2 Fan-tailed Cuckoos and a male
Golden Whistler.
Matthew Roach

Hutton's & Fluttering Shearwaters, Fairy Terns, Shy Albatross

Good numbers of Fluttering/Hutton's Shearwaters offshore (as seen
earlier in the day at Point Addis), about 100 or so. Some came close
enough to identify, a few Hutton's amongst the Fluttering. Also 3 Fairy
Terns, & about 5 Shy Albatrosses.

Nice photo of a Rufous Bristlebird singing next to car park. About 500
or so Fluttering/Hutton's Shearwaters offshore, most appeared to be
Fluttering, but I did suspect a few Hutton's too. About 4 Shy & 1
Black-browed Albatrosses too.
Kevin Bartram
