Dear all

To my surprise and a bit of chagrin yesterday, I discovered there is a White-faced Heron nest in a tall gum in the garden beyond the lane behind my house, with two well developed grey fluffy chicks. Why had I not seen this before? I had noticed the herons settling in the trees several times and croaking together but thought it was just courting behaviour as they have in the past nested along the nearby Gloucester River and occasionally settled in these trees. Never saw them carrying sticks and the nest is very well hidden - I can only see it from one point on the back deck. Usually one heron is standing nearby or on the chicks but sometimes no adult present so could be 2 to 3 weeks old.

Took a group of U3A beginner birders to Copeland State Conservation Reserve last Thursday 9th Sept. The big fig in a gulley off the Loop Track is heavily laden with figs and there were at least 6 if not more Wompoo Fruit-doves enjoying the bonanza. It's only possible to see bits of the fig canopy as one shifts up and down the track. We heard Noisy Pittas, not a peep out of the Lyrebird or Catbird populations, Logrunners were busy, and heard Rose Robins in several places. Saw a Russet-tailed Thrush high up a tree (usually on the ground). On my recce visit Monday 6 Sept, saw a Rose Robin male, heard lyrebirds and a Brown Goshawk was shrieking near the fig tree, sending a flock of pigeons scattering - couldn't see what species as vegetation too thick.
