Hi all
contrary to what others may think, some of us have been quiet on the
parrot front because we are out here enjoying the magnificent (non-
Princess) birding that the Alice Springs region has to offer! We're
not embarrassed and haven't been trespassing :)
A quick update though for those coming out while i have some service:
N'Dhala Gorge was magic! We spent 2 nights there it was so nice.
Painted Finch were literally a campsite bird. Also Dusky Grasswren,
Budgies (everywhere), a Western Bowerbird bower just over the creek
behind the camp ground, etc etc.
Santa Teresa rd
Rufous-crowned emuwren, Dusky grasswren (in the same bush!!) a few
hundred metres in, plus Painted Finch and a flushed Owlet Nightjar.
Thought we caught a glimpse of Spinifex bird near the road.
Banded Whiteface and 2 flocks of Bourkes Parrots at T&T site 21km
north of Erldunda - T&T still has the goods after all these years!
Bush camp on Finke River near Glen Helen last night had Major
Mitchells in the tree above our tent, plus Cockatiels, RTed-tailed
Blacks, budgies and ringnecks - so no pink parrots but lots of other
great parrot species.
Spinifexbird was tough at the Ormiston Gorge entry rd but we got one
eventually. contrary to previous info we have found these guys not
calling much. Also had Red-browed Pardalote and Little Button-Quail
here (spinifex patch 50m from turnoff).
No luck with Slaty-backed TB or Grey HE yet.
Drove the Mereenie Loop road and sadly passed THE TRACK. So near yet
so far but hey that's birding and I for one am having a ball. 6 new
birds for me so far and just a couple of photos :)
Even though it was tough to drive past the spot, we can't emphasise
enough how important it is for everyone to do the right thing at this
time especially. To be honest there didn't seem like many potential
habitat spots along the Mereenie Loop Rd itself.
A staff member at Kings Canyon did think she heard someone saying they
had seen Princess near Curtin Springs. Not sure if its accurate or
anything but it may be possible.
Might head out to Newhaven tonight.
