Hi all
I am spending a bit more time than usual at home at the moment, which gives
me a bit more time to suss out what happens bird wise around my
neighbourhood in the week. Over the last couple of weeks, it has been a
particularly busy for raptors in my neck of the woods. I have four
regulars, plus a number that pass through (or overhead I suppose) or are
seen regularly but less frequently. I am not sure whether this part of
Turramurra (or Sydney?) has a feature that attracts these birds, although we
(vaguely) are on a ridge line that runs down to Bobbin Head in the
Ku-Ring-Gai National Park
Many thanks to the local Noisy Miner population for their assistance with
these observations, as follows:
- a Black Shouldered Kite went over on 30 July heading westerly
- a Kestrel also passed over on 30 July as well, heading north
- a Whistling Kite passed over northwards on 10 Aug
- a Black Kite flopped over heading south-west on Sunday 15 Aug
- Grey Goshawk seen on Thursday (about 30 feet above the house - filled the
bins for a great view. This is a resident but I don't see them that often)
For the regulars
- a single Pacific Baza has been seen four times (also not popular with the
Lorikeets as well as winding up the Noisy Miners)
- Peregrine seen on 4 separate days, including yesterday when I saw it do a
stoop (but didn't see the end result)
- local Brown Goshawk and Collared Sparrowhawks have been seen several times
So that's 9 raptor species across just over a fortnight. Plus there has
been a flock of 15 or so Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoos about, plus the
regular local collection of parrots.
Cheers
Tom Wilson
