This afternoon in a small patch of lowland rainforest on the Sunshine Coast
near my home it was nice to find at least three White-eared Monarchs and two
pairs of Logrunners holding territories. There had been some doubt about
whether the monarch was a summer visitor to southeast Queensland and
northeast NSW or a resident; the likelihood is the latter, and that it is
overlooked when not calling in winter. Logrunners can be common enough in
the hills and mountains but are generally scarce in lowland rainforest.
Other birds seen today included 4 Russet-tailed Thrushes, White-naped
Honeyeater (a rare species in the coastal lowlands in this part of the
world), Regent Bowerbird and Green Catbird. Many of these birds will
presumably head for the hills as the weather warms up.
