Chris - as per our call earlier today I may have seen one of these birds
being harrassed by Cows and just abut everything else in the area on a wet
day a month or so ago at the small ponds on the southern side of the Will
Terrace causeway (literally 2 metres away from the traffic).
When i went back with a camera it was gone and I didn't get a positive ID
but thought is NNH-like...
Good spotting - and well out of range...did you get some pix?

Interesting morning at the sewage ponds in Alice Springs this morning.
First up I came across two juvenile Nankeen Night-herons right out in the
open. They let me approach quite close. Both were still fairly young but
had
well developed plumage, but still missing the dark cap. I believe these
are
quite unusual in the centre but we've had some stormy weather so maybe
they
are blow-ins. No sign of any adults around.
Also, three Black-tailed Godwits and four Wood Sandpipers foraging among
the
Black-winged Stilts.
All morning it has been alternating from steady drizzle to heavier rain.
It's only getting wetter out here in the desert.
