Sun 25 Jul Azure Kingfisher Alphington Wetlands
Having enjoyed brief views of one Azure Kingfisher this morning, I went
back in the afternoon and this time there were two, as previously
reported. Nice!

Powerful owl Mitcham/Donvale, Chippewa Ave
At 2.30am heard double-hooting of powerful owl just outside the bedroom
window in the garden. Loud and penetrating calls lasted for a few
minutes. Tick # 63 for the garden. Brush-tailed possum seemed
unperturbed. A little later sulpher-crested cockatoos sounded
distressed. I'm glad I got up for the Tour de France.

Sat 24 Jul Common Bronzewing Mount Cottrell (near melton)
One Common Bronzewing burst from long native grass at Mt Cottrell & flew
into Sugar Gums along adjacent Faulkiners Road. Very odd habitat for
Bronzewings as trees are almost non-existent on this old shield volcano
covered with dry native grassland (mainly Stipa). Closest Bronzewing
populations are Grey Box woodlands at Eynesbury Forest (about 8 km
distant) with a very few at Pinkerton /Frest & Bush's Paddock woodland
(3 kn distant). Observed by Pinkerton Landcare & Environment Group while
planting.

Swift Parrot Stephens Road Bushland Reserve, Bannockburn.
Approximately 20 Swift Parrots observed feeding in Eucalyptus Leucoxylon
(Yellow Gum) and Eucalyptus Viminalis (Manna Gum) in Reserve at 12
midday. Among other birds present were, Fan-tailed Cuckoos and good
numbers of various Honeyeater species.

Spiny-cheeked Honeyeaters 5k's north Axedale
2 birds seen this morning. Heard initially down by the Campaspe River
and then flew up into some Euc. leucoxylon rosea along the driveway.
Stayed for about 1/2 hour.

One male bird seen by BOCA Beginners Group, on east side of dry
billabong, not far from windmill.

Fri 23 Jul Blue-winged Parrot Lake Connewarre
BWP flying to another shrub. These guys have been everywhere but no
OBP's. Even Red rumps and eastern rosellas joined them on the plentiful
glasswort seeds.

Grey Goshawk (white morph) Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne -
Entry Road, between Australian Garden & Stringybark Drive
Single bird seen ca. 2 pm, on south side of Entry Road. Spooked by our
vehicle as we drove by, from a Eucalyptus cephalocarpa (Silver-leaf
Stringybark) in heathy woodland. It flew out of the tree close to the
road and then perched on top of a dead tree ca. 100 metres further
south. Clear view of the bird (not a Corella or Sulphur-crested
Cockatoo!).

Small party (two males and at least two brown birds) still present at
Wurundjeri Walk, as reported by George Pergaminelis (18/7)

Thu 22 Jul Musk Lorikeet, Black-chinned Honeyeater You Yangs
Regional Park
Musk Lorikeet: Mating! time: 11.42. Both flew into a high branch of a
River Red Gum near small dam in gully just east of Information Centre
car park. Started grooming each other, then a minute or so later started
mating. I managed to video part of it (see YouTube link). After he
jumped off, she pecked at his chest & neck, then groomed her left wing,
then grabbed one of his tail feathers in her beak. (2). Black-chinned
Honeyeater: three species of Honeyeater (White-plumed, White-naped,
Black-chinned) seen hanging around a mature female koala when we arrived
at around 11.30. One of them (not identified) was plucking fur off
koala. A lot of chasing ensued, it seemed like the 3 species were
competing for the space. Then a Black-chinned landed on the koala's left
shoulder/upper back and stayed perched on her for a minute or so,
filling his beak with fur until it stuck out on all sides. Finally flew
off. Koala showed no interest at all. Other koalas have been seen to
smack at the birds, but maybe this female is an easy target!.

Turquoise Parrot Snowy river near Willis Vic/NSW border.
Up to 12 Turquoise Parrots have been seen in the Phillips Ck to
Gattamurh Ck area since 9 june. Six were at the Gattamurh crossing
yesterday.

Yellow-tailed Black-Cockatoos 5km north of Axedale
6 in a eucalypt just outside the house. They then flew south towards
Axedale. Numbers have been regularly reported around Bendigo since the
Black Saturday bushfires.

3 Brolgas (2ad 1juv) on a small dam on the left of road approx 1k along
the Terrick Terrick Road. On the return from the Terricks, they were
over the far side of the paddock.

One Blue-faced Honeyeater seen feeding in flowering eucalypts in High St
Yea.

Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater Serendip Sanctuary, Lara
time: 16.08. One bird calling from top of a casuarina beside perimeter
drive near south-west paddock. Another bird calling nearby. Second time
they've been seen in this location (1).

One adult perched on fallen timber on the southern side of the
main/central lake.

Crested Shrike-tit, Shining Bronze-Cuckoo, Bassian Thrush
Mississippi Trail, Colquhoun SF, Lakes Entrance
Despite overcast conditions 40 species were located today during our
EGBOC outing. Interesting observations included 2 Crested Shrike-tits, 2
Shining Bronze-Cuckoos and single sightings of a Bassian Thrush and
Peregrine Falcon.

Sun 18 Jul Black-shouldered Kite Lower Homestead Rd, Wonga Park
On the way to the Heritage Wetlands I spotted an adult Black-shouldered
Kite hovering over a paddock into the stiff breeze. It dropped and
lifted back up with a mouse. Two other kites appeared instantly and one
(a juvenile) grabbed it's breakfast on the second attempt. Adult then
returned to it's hunting.

Spotless Crake & Musk Duck (breeding) Western Treatment Plant,
Werribee
2 Spotless Crakes and Musk Duck with young were the best of 81 species
for the day. Others of interest were adult White-bellied Sea-Eagle
gathering green leaves (nesting?), Wedge-tailed Eagle, Peregrine Falcon,
Australian Hobby, Nankeen Kestrel (3), Whiskered Tern (8), Australian
Reed-Warbler (2), Common Greenshank, Double-banded Plover (100+) and
Cape Barren Goose (2).

Sat 17 Jul Black Falcon Nhill
A juvenile Black Falcon feeding on side of road on dead possum.
Initially thought it was a Brown Falcon because it was so pale in the
face, but heavily feathered tibia when perched and then rakish
appearance when in flight, with flat profile confirmed ID. Also Black
Kite & Black-shouldered Kite in area.

Slender-billed Thornbill, Rufous Field-wren, White-fronted
Honeyeater, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater Phillips Track, Little Desert
Heaps of activity from honeyeaters, mainly Tawny-crowned & New Holland,
but also White-fronted & Brown-headed. A small group of Slender-billed
Thornbills found, too dull to get good photos. Rufous Fieldwrens also in
area. Also male Flame Robin by the side of the road, 2 Zebra Fnches &
Little Wattlebirds at the Little Desert, c20k south of Nhill.

Forest Raven Little Desert, 26 K north of Gymbowen
First heard giving very low call, then 2 flew past & landed in a tree
close enough to photograph. Photographed one bird giving diagnostic call
display, sitting horizontally & dipping tail below plain of wings which
were held steady, no flapping, all time giving low 'souless' call, much
lower than Australian Ravens, seen & heard all day & also much lower
than Little Raven (seen later in day at Horsham). Photos also show a
large-billed bird & when calling a moderately large spikey mound on the
throat, not a very large beard, as in Aust. Raven. Mound on throat, not
disimilar to Little, but bill far too large, bird generally much larger.
In flight tail proportionately short. Closest I've heard of Forest
Ravens, to here were some individuals collected from Edenhope further
south.

Sooty Oystercatcher Flat Rocks, Inverloch
13 Sooty Oystercatchers on the rocks at low tide, a Winter flock that
has been slowly increasing over the last month.

Blue-faced Honeyeater Horsham City
Blue faced Honey Eaters - 20-30 Observed feeding in flowering trees and
on the ground. (Tennis Courts near the botanical Gardens) 2.30-4.30pm
Have not previously seen here - seen them at Kingfisher Lodge in
Julatten - Could not believe my eyes when seeing them here. Have photo's
- just need to process them.
