Birdline NT

Published sightings for the week ending 18 Jul 2010.

Sat 10 Jul Roseate Tern Lee Point, Darwin, NT.
Single bird seen on exposed rocks of beach, amongst Gull-billed Terns
and Red-capped Plovers. All salient features obvious : long black cap
'pulled down' over nape, longer, forked tail (longer than wings when
sitting), dark orange bill, white forehead. Friend and I debated the
i.d. for many minutes whilst observing the bird, our only point of
confusion was the dk. orange bill (not quite 'red' as illustrated or
described in either Pizzey/Knight or Simpson/Day) however, since
returning home and accessing images of birds online the sighting seems
likely. Perhaps worth a look by a Darwin resident with more experience
with these birds and this site???

Wed 7 Jul Gouldian Finches Bird Billabong, Marrakai Track and
Umbrawarra Gorge Road
Gouldians seen on recent birding trip to Darwin/Top End at three
distinct sites. (7/07) Black Faced and juvs. seen in tree tops 200m from
Bird Billabong carpark on slight rise heading out of the park (small
group, dozen or so) (8/07) Single red-faced Gouldian seen in small flock
of Masked Finches on Marrakai Track/Rd. (S 12 49' 10.2" : E 131 24'
59.1") (12/07) Single juv. seen with Long-tailed Finches (with dull yet
distinct plumage, green wings etc.) at Copperfield Creek
crossing/causeway on Umbrawarra Gorge Road S. of Pine Creek.

Mon 5 Jul Variegated Fairy-wren Stokes Range
These are distinctive, matching neither dulcis or rogersi. Blue band
behind back on neck is absent, and the chestnut band is larger and
wider. Females no red eye ring. (10).
