Birdline NT
Published sightings for the week ending 18 Jul 2010.
Sat 10 Jul Roseate Tern Lee Point, Darwin, NT.
Single bird seen on exposed rocks of beach, amongst Gull-billed Terns
and Red-capped Plovers. All salient features obvious : long black cap
'pulled down' over nape, longer, forked tail (longer than wings when
sitting), dark orange bill, white forehead. Friend and I debated the
i.d. for many minutes whilst observing the bird, our only point of
confusion was the dk. orange bill (not quite 'red' as illustrated or
described in either Pizzey/Knight or Simpson/Day) however, since
returning home and accessing images of birds online the sighting seems
likely. Perhaps worth a look by a Darwin resident with more experience
with these birds and this site???
