G'day Bill and Jack,
I am reasonably confident your juvenile in the hand is actually a young King
Quail.
This species is very likely to be in the same habitat with Red-backed
Buttonquail which you clearly also saw and photographed an adult of.
Juvenile Red-backed BQ are very dark with pale spots on the breast and a
darker bill.
Cheers Jeff.

Masked, Eastern Grass and Rufous Owls were the highlight from this quick
trip to Townsville and Ingham (as well as a terrific 60th birthday party and
catching up with Len and Chris Ezzy!)
Cheers,
Bill
