Following Chris Sanderson & others sightings of Musk Lorikeets in and around
Brisbane, today I visited two sites with the hope of seeing them. First stop
was Sheep Station Creek Environmental Park at Upper Caboolture. I entered from
the southern (Williamson Rd) entrance and walked no more than 500m. Musks were
heard then seen immediately feeding high-up in euc.blossom, and over most of
the walk, around 30+ I would estimate. Also present were Little Lorikeet (7),
Rainbows, Galah, Sulpher-crested Cockatoo, Pale-headed Rosella. Honeyeaters
were also in abundance with Noisy Miner, Striped (4),Fuscous,Yellow-faced,
Scarlet and Noisy Friarbird (in constant battle with a pair of Rainbow Lorikeet
over a section of blossom). A single Dusky Woodswallow was pleasing as I
infrequently encounter it around here.
The second site was the Chelsea Street Environmental Reserve at Kippa-Ring
where again Musks were found, firstly 5 in a single flowering euc. amongst the
meleluca forest towards the Hays Inlet CP, and then 2 along the track under the
power lines . Other lorikeets species seen were Rainbow, Little (3) and
Scaly-breasted (5). Honeyeaters were also feasting here, with lots of Brown,
Noisy Miner, more Striped, and White-throated.
I'm off to Ewan Maddock Dam near Landsborough tomorrow and will again be
searching for the Musks.
