Highlight of the past weekend at Kurrajong Hills c 70 kms nw of Sydney
was my first local record of Sugar Gliders - one glider yapping in
Turpentines at our gate, and another also calling and seen well on the
edge of Western Sydney dry rainforest just below the house. This is the
2nd species of glider Ive recorded in our garden following
Feather-taileds last year. Olive-backed Orioles are in unusual numbers
at present, with at least 7-8 pairs seen along the c 500 metres length
of Douglas Farm Rd. Honeyeater movement this autumn is on a smaller
scale than usual, and so far all Yellow-faced - not accompanied by
White-napeds as yet. 4 Gang Gang Cockatoos seen are presumably part of
the same group which has been present since at least Nov 09. Other good
but typical birds included 3-4 pairs of Yellow-throated Scrubwrens,
Brown Cuckoo-dove, Wonga Pigeon, upwards of 18 Common Bronzewings
feeding in the garden with Peaceful and Bar-shouldered Doves, and
Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoos. A possible Scarlet Robin sighting during
the week but the bird could not be relocated.
