Nice report Theo.
Following up on southern records of Pictorella Mannikin, yes the Lake Quarry
record is extremely southerly. I'd put in a BA Atlas report. Interestingly
Pictorella Mannikin were also seen this year (March) at Bladensburg NP, just
sth of Winton, about 50 km nth of your records. There is also a recent record
south of Winton on the Winton-Jundah Rd.
As far as I can see there are only 2 previous records south of Lake Quarry. In
2007 Pictorella Mannikin were seen at Cravens Peak Nature Refuge (April), just
north of the Simpson Desert (approx parallel to Alice Springs). While the most
southerly report is from South Australia on the Birdsville Tk, just nth of Lake
Harry and the River Clayton (approx parallel with the Qld/NSW border).
Aside from that: in Qld the population of Pictorella Mannikin start from around
Mt Isa northwards; in the NT there's a population near Tanami (i.e.
intersection of the Tanami Rd and Lajamanu Rd) and east towards Canteen Creek;
while in WA the southern most population is around Halls Ck and Fitzroy
Crossing.

Just spent 2 weeks in outback queensland with stuart johnson and steve
saunders.All the the locals assured us this is the best you will ever see it,
though because the rain was so widespread, the birds were very dispersed.What
you want is localised rain during a drought.Only saw approx 140 sp.
Highlights were -
Noccundra - Chirruping Wedgebills, Black Honeyeater, crippling look at a male
Chestnut-breasted Quail Thrush sitting on a tree branch "singing his head off".
100km west of Windorah - male Orange chats, quite a few groups of 2-3 Flock
Bronzewings, good numbers of red-chested button-quail.
Birdsville - Bedourie - Boulia - more groups of 2-3 Flock Bronzewings,
sub-adult Black-breasted Buzzard.
30km east of Dajarra - pair of Black-tailed Treecreepers, pair of Ground
Cuckoo-Shrikes.
Lake Moonderra - flock of 10-20 Pictorella Mannikins.
Lark Quarry - pair of male Painted Finches in car park.
5km south of Lark Quarry - Spinifexbirds, small flock of Pictorella Mannikins -
possible southern record?
20km south of Lark Quarry - Rufous-crowned Emu-Wrens
Bowra - Little Woodswallow sitting in afternoon sun 3 metres away.
Other interesting records - pair of fledgling Channel-billed Cuckoos
parasitising corvid nest up Ethabuka drive 10 km west of Bedourie, and
comparisons of freshly road-killed Black-breasted buzzard and Wedge-tailed
Eagle, with the buzzards talons only about a quarter to a third the size and
strenght of the wedgies.
