Hi All,

I've (re)joined the list to make a couple of comments regarding the BOCA cd's.

The CD's were intended as a replacement of the old BOCA tapes which were put
together by Rex Buckingham and Len Jackson in the 80's and 90's and as such
follow the format of the original tapes. Howard Plowright - who volunteered to
compile, edit and narrate the CD's - found that many of the original recordings
were unsuitable for transfer to CD and undertook the mammoth task of tracking
down new recordings from members of the wildlife sound recording community. In
all Howard spent something like 7 years sourcing recordings and preparing the
CD's. With reference to the comments regarding the voice overs, the CD's were
intended a field guide to bird call rather than a playback tool.

While the calls included on CD's were donated for the project, the copyright on
the individual recordings included on the CD's is retained by the original
recordists. There is no single owner of the recordings and I believe permission
from all recordists (or their estates) would be required before the calls could
be published as digital downloads.

For those that have a more than passing interest in bird calls might be
interested in the Australia Wildlife Sound Recording Group which publishes a
Journal (AudioWings) and CD twice a year. The membership is made up of
amateur, academic and professional recordists, and non-recordists who are
simply interested in listening to nature sound recordings. The content of the
Journal tends to more in depth studies of bird call and technical articles,
while the CD usually presents around 70 minutes of species calls, prepared
pieces and soundscape recordings from members. Further information can be found
on the group website - http://www.awsrg.org.au

I have a few recordings online, which tend to be soundscapes rather that
individual species calls, which can be found on
http://www.urbanbirder.com.au/recordings

The Spiny Cheeks at Round Hill and Clarksdale recordings were included on
recent AWSRG CD's

cheers
Paul
