Masked Lapwings nested on an island in our dam recently. The chicks hatched on the 27th April. The island is fairly small and I was worried there wouldn't be enough food for them and that they would be stuck there until they could fly. The following morning I observed both parents walking around the paddocks and giving every impression that the chicks were with them. I couldn't see if the chicks were there or not because of the long grass. It is possible that they are still on the island and that their parents are bringing food to them, but I have scanned the island several times and failed to find them. Nor have I seen the parents returning to the island. They would have to cross five metres of water to escape the island. Can the chicks swim? Would the parents piggyback them across? Are they still on the island, but hiding?
