Ruth and I spent a day over the Anzac Day long weekend in the southern part
of the Big Desert Wilderness Area and the farmland to the south of that area
looking for Australian Bustards - and dipping. We travelled a considerable
distance up the Murrayville Track from Yanac to about 40km into Big Desert
before doubling back and travelling west along Red Bluff Track, then south
along Chappel Road before criss-crossing Arthurs Road, Millers Road and
Edgerley Road between the South Australian border and the Murrayville Track.
We spent considerable time scanning paddocks at Wagon Flat (on the
Murrayville Track) and also Telopea Downs (on Edgerley Road) - and pretty
much any paddock we could see from the road.
I know of a couple of other birders that have also tried for Bustards in the
same general area in the last little while, all of whom have also dipped.
Who has seen Bustards in Victoria recently - in the last few years - I
wonder?
