These misidentifications and misconceptions are amusing, but I wonder how many people have little understanding of the diversity of bird life in their area because of them. How often have you heard a dog owner say "But they're only chasing seagulls"? It's not so long ago that I thought fairy-wrens were Willie Wagtails, and assumed most small brown birds were sparrows.
