Hi all
After analysing photos from our 09/04/2010 St Helens pelagic attended by
Liz Znidersic, Mariagrazia Bellio, Max Finlayson, Patricia May and
myself, we were unable to confirm the identity of the 10+ possible
White-bellied Storm-Petrels seen on the trip. There were no shots that
could clinch the identity of the birds seen; sea conditions on the day
were joggly and these birds were rarely closer than 50-100m from the
boat feeding well back in our berley trail and nearly always towards the
reflecting sun. At the same time we had numerous Grey-backed, Wilson's
and White-faced storm-petrels around the boat making it difficult to
determine any sequence of photographs that can be attributed to one
individual bird. Anyway that's my excuse and i am stickn to it.
And so we will wait and see what happens next weekend. Because this
recording would have been the first claimed live observation of
White-bellied Storm-Petrel in Tasmania and in light of discussions with
others including Mike Carter I have decide the correct status of our
sighting is" possible White-bellied Storm-Petrel observation awaiting
confirmation"
What is certain though is that while over the continental shelf we had
at least 10 and possibly up to 20 white rumped, white bellied type storm
petrels none of which showed any sign of a black central belly line that
would indicate Black-bellied Storm-Petrel. We know that Black bellied
are occasionally known to have all white bellies and that sometimes this
feature can be hard to see but it would seem unlikely that of so many
birds observed, none showed any sign of a black belly line. The birds
we observed had differing amounts of white underwing, trailing leg
length and amount of black on their throat/upper breast. It has left
us in a state of excitement wondering what they were and now looking
forward to the next opportunity to see them again on Saturday 17th when
we are running another pelagic from St Helens.
There are seats available on this trip so if any one is interested let
me know.

Hi all
On our pelagic targeting Storm Petrels from St Helens to the off shore
seamount yesterday, 4 species were observed in good numbers. 10+
White-bellied Storm-Petrels were the highlight. Also Grey-backed,
Wilson's and White face were seen in good numbers as well as Antarctic
and Fairy Prions. Many hundreds of albatross also. I will post a
full report next week as we are going again today.
We are running another trip next Saturday 17th April and there are
several spaces available.
