The mounting screw for both cameras and telescopes is 1/4" Whitworth. Female on the scope, male on the tripod. Any decent camera shop will have a ball and socket head (even if you wreck a $5 table-top tripod to just get the head). A piece of 3-4 mm steel with a 1/4" hole and a short 1/4" bolt to fasten the head to it, and a G clamp big enough for the thickest hide shelf you expect.

If you want to be flash you can get the local garage to weld the plate to the clamp. For super flash, get a REAL tripod head instead of the ball and socket- might be appropriate if like us you use a quick release plate on your scope.
