Hello again
This morning (18 Feb. 2010) at about 0830 hrs there were 4 Oriental
Plovers in the same position as reported on the 12th Feb. One bird in
nearly complete breeding plumage. Associating loosely with more than
100 Banded Plovers (Lapwings) they were harassed more than once this
morning by a peregrine falcon stooping across the paddock . This made
birds jumpy however it was easy to find the Oriental Plovers in flight.
At about 0930 the plovers flew off in a sw direction beyond the horizon.
If contemplating a visit ( The site is in a paddock approx. 150 metres
south west of Hills Rd otherwise known as Mac's Beach Rd. The position
using google earth is 34 21" 450 137 58" 850.) note that typical Price
weather patter at this time of year is strong afternoon sea breezes that
present difficulties using optics and before 9.00 am is recommended to
beat the heat haze, the wind and the flies.
Also of great interest, last Tuesday 16th Feb., Ms Teresa Jack after
locating 3 Oriental Plovers here, approximately 4 hrs later made a
notable discovery of 3 Little Curlew and 3 Oriental Plover at Bird
Island CP. Road south of Wallaroo SA (approx. 50 km nw of Price) . Her
observations were reported on birdpedia and I have cross posted them below.
Yesterday 17th Feb. several observers including myself met Teresa at the
Wallaroo site and were lucky enough to see the 3 Little Curlews. They
allowed close views and appeared settled.
After observing the Little Curlews, Pat and I returned to Price via Cape
Elizabeth where we observed 25 Sanderling and 4 Hooded Plover.
At present both the weather and the birds are hot here on Yorke Peninsula SA

Great to find 80+ Banded Lapwings and 3 Oriental Plovers. They are way out in
the paddock and were just resting in the sun. I visited the area following
some good reporting at the weekend.
Today they were on the southern side of Hills Rd, which runs down to the beach,
south of the Price Salt fields. In the open paddock before the samphire
starts. Hills Rd is marked on Google Maps.

Little Curlew (Numenius minutus) (3)
Oriental Plover (Charadrius veredus) (3)
Rock Parrot (Neophema petrophila) (40)
Great birding today, 25 Banded Lpawings in the paddock and another 10 over on
the beach.
To my surprise 3 Little Curlew and 3 Oriental Plovers with them.
They are all spread out in the paddock, southern side of the road, 100 metres plus back from the road. Bird Island Rd is a few Klm's south of Wallaroo of the Moonta Rd and half a klm from the beach.
They did fly around but settled back feeding.

Thanks for your enquiries. The location is on private property; in a

Beach Rd). The approx. position using google earth is 34 21" 45 137
58" 85.
The 4 Oriental Plovers were first observed about midday yesterday
apparently feeding amongst a scattered roosting flock of 63 Banded
Plovers. They appeared settled so I returned to the site with my
camera equip and scope about 2.30 pm. Although not noticed earlier, a
flock of sheep were now scattered across the paddock. I searched
thoroughly for more than 1/2 hr but could not relocate the OP's
however the banded plovers had moved a few hundred metres south and
their total numbers were now 87.
<>Although within the same paddock, the habitat at this southern
location is rough undulating sandy ground with lumpy samphire and OP's
would be difficult to locate if they had moved into it.
I intend to return again this morning for another look and will report
the result when I return home to Price this afternoon.
