I just wanted to add my bit to this thread. (better late than never)

The great aussie singer/songwriter John Williamson is a keen birder and
mentions different aussie birds in nearly ALL his songs. I was having a beer
with him after one of his gigs and he said that the song 'rip rip woodchip'
uses the melody from a butcher bird (in this bit in italics: "*What am I
gonna do* - what about the future?). he's pretty good at his bird calls too.
and gone are the days when a song like "old man emu" could go to number one
on the charts and go gold!

(p.s. i had never heard BSP so thank you simon)
