I observed a single non breeding Red Necked Phalarope yesterday approximately
28 nautical miles offshore WNW from Weipa.  It was sitting on the water feeding
in a current line containing lots of floating debris - weed, logs, coconuts,
old netting, rope, thongs etc.  Lots of other marine life (fish, sea snakes
etc) was also present.  Unfortunately before I could manage a photo, the bird
flew off (roughly towards the coast). I have observed the species once before
in January 2006 at the Werribee treatment plant.
