Seems a bit harsh Mike.

I would be surprised if any author of a general field guide has ever either personally measured a representative sample of all species included or derived the information solely & directly from statistically valid field research measurements.

 

Surely what Phil is doing is sifting through the published data to confirm this parameter (among many others) & flagging the discrepancies for expert opinion & thus adding to the accuracy of the weight of published information.

The fact that Phil has raised this issue with you suggests to me that he is not merely copying but carrying out legitimate literature review with a view to validating his inputs.
