Hi all,
I visited Thomsons Lake (southern suburbs of Perth) this morning to look for
crakes and waders. No sign of any crakes and there were very few suitable areas
left for them. There was a reasonable variety of waders though, although no
sign of the recently reported Wood Sandpipers. Highlights were a Black-tailed
Godwit and a Pectoral Sandpiper. There is very little water left in the lake
and I expect it to be dry by the weekend if not earlier, but it may be worth a
visit in the next day or so as there seems to be some passage of waders through
the area. The Sharp-tailed Sanpipers, Pectoral Sandpipers, Greenshank etc. were
around the last remaining pools of water in the N & NE of the lake, while the
small waders were spread out in the mud along the W shore.
Full wader count was as follows;
Black-winged Stilt (23)
Banded Stilt (1)
Black-tailed Godwit (1)
Common Greenshank (24)
Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (80+)
Pectoral Sandpiper (1)
Red-necked Stint (600+)
Red-capped Plover (700+)
Cheers,
John
