This seems like an appropriate time to note that I've twice unsuccessfully
tried to unsubscribe by following the instructions in the common email footer.
A bit like the Hotel California - you check out any time you like but you can
never leave :D
My 2c worth: I run a parenting list that's run as a Yahoo group. Those who like
forum views can use the Yahoo group website.. Those who like mailing lists can
use email (to read and/or post messages).. The bonus is access to areas where
group members can post photos, run polls, add events to a common group
calendar, etc. If you receive emails you can choose daily digests or all-in-one
(as per here). That said, we debated for a while whether to move to online
forum software - ultimately people were happy with the way it was, and as group
owner I hesitate to make too many changes - there would almost certainly be a
fallout of members in the process (but then, that's the life of a dynamic
online community anyway...)
Chris.

Subject: RE: [Birding-Aus] Birding-aus a forum?
If birding-aus was to grow to the stage where we were all receiving
unmanageable amounts of mail then we'd probably have no choice but to split it
somehow, by moving to a web forum or by starting a second list for some
subtopics, for fear of losing subscribers. I don't think we're anywhere near
that stage.
If people are having difficulties with the current amount of traffic then there
are probably techniques they can use to cope.
On the other hand, I would imagine there are younger list members for whom web
forums are the normal way of doing things, and who may not have used a mailing
list before, who are wondering why on earth we used mail in the first place.

I agree with Peter here - forums are often too fragmented into sub-groups (plus
you have to remember to actually visit them) and digests can be a pain to read
through.
I like birding-aus the way it is - the discussions ARE the forum.
