Hi birders,
After another very dry spring in the Capertee Valley, the last few
weeks have brought good rain and suddenly everything is green. The
previously brown paddocks have been transformed into lush carpets of
green grass and most importantly for birds, the Box Mistletoe
throughout the valley is in heavy bud with some flowers already open.
This augurs well for a great autumn and will hopefully bring back the
honeyeaters, which have been in lower numbers during the past few
months than I can ever remember there.
Observant visitors will also notice that the Rough-barked Angophoras
are now flowering well. This is not generally considered to be one of
the really great nectar producing trees; nevertheless they do seem to
be attracting good numbers of Noisy Friarbirds, Little Lorikeets and
a few Scarlet Honeyeaters, e.g. along the track that leads into
Wollemi NP down the river from Glen Davis (access is from Goora St).
On Saturday, between dramatic thunderstorms we recorded 100+ species,
the best being 6 Plum-headed Finches at the windmill a short distance
along Crown Station Road. Rainbow Bee-eaters are in good numbers and
there seemed to be an influx of Cuckoo-shrikes - both Black-faced and
White-bellied.
On the way to the valley we saw a flock of 10 Gang-gangs at Cullen Bullen.
The recent rain will provide a much-needed boost for last year's tree
plantings for the Regent Honeyeater (the next planting weekend will
be in May, dates to be confirmed).
Cheers,
Carol
