Took a look at Pitt Town nw of Sydney on Sat morning from 730 hoping to sight
the recently-reported Ruff. No sign of the bird amongst a total of apprx 35+
Sharp-tailed type sandpipers and a Red-kneed Dotterel. A great flock of
Chestnut-breasted Mannikins was feeding right by the mound, 60-70 birds with
only about 6 of the flock in adult plumage, others in all stages from juveniles
through to some with partial chest bands coming into adult plumage. A few
Nutmeg Mannikins, Red-browed inc immatures and Double-barred Finches nearby.
Also of interest a flock of 32 spoonbills including 6 Yellow-billed, 6 Aust
Shoveller and a Horsfields Bronze-cuckoo. Golden-headed Cisticola were
gathering nesting material.
At Richmond Airbase there were 70+ White-throated Needletails feeding low over
the base and nearby farmland. Saw a further 12+ later in the day near Rouse
Hill. (Both while driving so likely there were more present).
For anyone in the area there were large numbers of ducks on the small lagoon.
At Kurrajong Hills a Swamp Wallaby with joey, Dollarbirds with 2 young and a
Rufous Fantail all at Douglas Farm Rd.
