I am astounded that so many seemingly intelligent people are so obsessed with complaining about bird names and their desires to change them.

As one who regularly teaches classes in bird identification to those with very little knowledge of birds I find no resistance to the current names but at the same time I make it clear that any one can call any bird what ever they like. If you like to call a Magpie Lark Peewe that fine. If you want to cal it George, that's also fine but if you want me to know what you're talking about you need to call it something I understand and that's what the common names achieve.

Instead of going on about names I get out and enjoy the birds.
