The beak's a bit different in shape but I'd suggest the Cairns bird
might have been a Marsh Sandpiper which incidentally don't frequent the
Americas.( Hayman et al, 1995, p146 plate 138 and p325).

I can't comment on the possibility of a Stilt Sandpiper in Cairns.
