Hi Carl and other birders,
I bought and read this novel last year and thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
I even wrote a glowing review on my birding blog here:

I thoroughly recommend this book as an entertaining read.

Dear All,
I was browsing through the Gleebooks Summer Reading Guide that came with
the Sydney Morning Herald today and came across a book that may be a
gift idea for a birder. The book is "A Guide to the Birds of East
Africa" by Nicholas Drayson. Firstly, it is not a field guide. The book,
set in Kenya, tells the tale of a birder who has fallen in love with a
young lady, who is the leader of a mid-week birding outing and is trying
to gather enough courage to ask the young lady to accompany him to the
Hunt Ball. The young man discovers that he has a rival, a school-days
adversary, for the young lady's affections. The two men agree to compete
for the right to escort the young lady to the Ball by means of a week
long twitchathon. The book should appeal to the fans of Alexander
McCall-Smith. Sounds like a ripping yarn.
Glee Books has the book on special at the moment for $13.95. At that
price I might even be tempted myself.
