Geoff,
Gouldian finches were probably last seen reliably in the Georgetown area in the
late 1980s/early 1990s. It is rumoured that locals may be breeding and
releasing them so you might be in with a chance. There have been some recent
sightings North of Mt Isa.

There have also been a few unconfirmed reports along the Barron River near
Mareeba. These will be birds released from the Mareeba wetlands project.
However, Georgetown is an excellent spot for birding, one of my favourites in
the region. It's well worth a visit, particularly in the dry. We last went out
there in April. A good location is the Racecourse. Around the track we found
Black-throated Finch, Masked Finch and Pictorella Mannikin in the same tree. On
previous trips we have also found Plum-headed Finch at Cumberland dam.
