Amongst the more typical species seen this morning around 730 at the Kensington
Ponds in Centennial Park was a Dollarbird and a Latham's Snipe in full view on
the pond edge. Good numbers of Yellow and Yellow-rumped Thornbill nearby. Brown
Quail heard not seen. There are several pairs of Darter nesting on Busbys Pond.
Lots of manic Koel activity - to me these birds (and Channel-billed Cuckoo)
seem to have been unusually quiet around inner Sydney for the past month,
perhaps due to the cooler than usual temperatures or food sources. Also of
interest was the noticeable level of turtle activity on both ponds, possibly
breeding activity under way. Sighted about 14 individuals in just over an hour,
including a group of 6 on the banks of Kensington. 5 of the 6 appeared to be
Sydney Basin Turtle, one was a Snake-necked.
Cheers
Eric
