I'm really saddened to see that despite joining the EU with its supposedly
strict rules on bird conservation Malta is still home to the mindless mass
slaughter of migrant birdlife. I was there 10 years ago and it was horrific-
everything from Harriers to tiny warblers were being blown apart by drunken
hooligans with shotguns, nothing was safe. I vowed not to return until this
butchering stopped. The laws in Malta against this 'hunting' are feeble and the
enforcement is also weak and under-resourced: pressure is needed on the Maltese
government to get them to take real action. I'm sure that if birders around the
world wrote directly to their tourism promotion organisations to spell out
exactly why we will be spending our dollars elsewhere then it will have an
effect, especially in this economic climate. Money talks- lets get it talking
for conservation for a change.
Anyone in the mood for helping out these migrant birds should consider emailing
the goverment tourism orgs 'visit malta' and the 'maltese tourism authority' to
spell out just why you are not spending your birding dollars on a trip there
and instead will visit places which take conservation seriously:

Birdlife Malta and supporting their hard work.
