Hi all
An hour at Eastlakes before sunset today gave some nice inner city
sightings. On the course near Cowper St was a very vocal White-winged
Triller, which I had dipped on at this site until today. The recently
reported Rufous Songlark is still calling here too, but couldn't sight
him. Put up 6 Latham's Snipe from trackside dry bracken and acacia scrub
above the swamp. There are 3 cygnets with the Black Swan pair on the 2nd
pond north of Wentworth Ave. Also here were a pair of Black-fronted
Dotterel and a magnificent Royal Spoonbill. A Collared Sparrowhawk
harassed by New Holland Honeyeaters and Aust Magpies flew over carrying
what looked like a small waterfowl chick - could only see a small ball
of greyish down in its claws. A single Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo
seen. Heard but not seen were Bar-shouldered Dove, Shining
Bronze-cuckoo, and Koel. Plenty of reed warblers and a few Little
Grassbirds seen, cisticolas calling. Scanned the moorhens for any native
hens but unfortunately none - did not get up to the main pond before
sunset so no chance to look for them there.
Cheers
Eric
