Following the recent postings about the new Slater field guide (long awaited
and in general very welcome) I have been reviewing the current situation re
Australia's 4 field guides and noted that Simpson & Day is not only "stuck"
on its 2004 seventh edition (after being quite regularly revised up until
then) but that it is listed as Out of Print on Buteo Books' website (Buteo
is now the print retail partner for the American Birding Association -
which, like Birds Australia, used to have its own retail arm - ABASales).

What's the score with Simpson & Day?

And while on the subject of the new Slater, I was surprised to read the
following on p 156 (Egrets) in the Little Egret text: In flight has slower
wing-beat than Cattle, faster than Plumed and Large, usually flies alone.
Plumed and Large?? How did the author and editor miss these superseded
names, which don't seem to get a mention anywhere else in the book (and
certainly not in the index)?
