I received the following information about a possible Abbott's Booby at
Shark Bay in Western Australia from Stella Stewart-Wynne. Unfortunately we
don't have a photograph, so unable to confirm at this stage. Sorry for the
delay. It was a little time before Stella returned to Perth, and then
emailed me, and I was hoping for a bit more information first.
I have been doing the bird walks at Monkey Mia for DEC.
Last Saturday, 26th Sept., Elizabeth Ellis and I did a cruise to see
dugongs etc.
The skipper pointed out a 'strange' bird on the water that he had seen on
and off recently, and asked us if we knew what it was. We couldn't get a
photo, too far for our cameras, and nor did we have a b book on the boat.
Quite clearly a Booby, with totally dark wing and dark eye patch.
Checking in the bird book once on shore, by elimination it seemed to be an
Abbott's booby.
Alas we couldnt do more boat trips to try to find it.
I asked both the tour boat people (enthusiastic) and some one from DEC
(unenthusiastic) to keep an eye out, take photo's if pos., and keep me informed
