I have just completed a 7 weeks trip which included 11 days on Kangaroo Island
as well as some time in the Victoria/SA mallee, returning via the Coorong and
central Victoria.
Highlights included:
a) Red-lored Whistler - north of Rocket Lake campsite (34 37 18, 141 29
46)
b) Barbary Dove - Elizabeth Vale (as per previous postings) - probably
my easiest tick for quite a while.
c) Rufous Bristlebird - that darted across the Loop Road (Coorong)
d) Superb Parrot - numerous sightings in the southern Riverina from
Mathoura to Jerilderie
e) 16 of the 17 targeted sub-species from Kangaroo Island (I intend
doing a detailed trip report for the Island, including an anotated list.
Contact me direct if you would like a copy). My total for the Island was 101
species - the only endemic sub-species that I missed was the Shy Heathwren. Of
particular note were:
- Orange Chat - pair at Kingscote (with a pair of Crimson Chats)
- Mallee Whipbird - that walked around me in an unconcerned manner
on the Hanson Track.
- Glossy Black-Cockatoo - 5 behind American River
- Banded Stilt - 5 near Emu Bay (with Black-winged Stilts)
