Just spent 3 days birding around Jervis Bay (in the Shoalhaven area of NSW)
and saw a few birds of interest, particularly on 30 September - Brush
Bronzewing and Eastern Bristlebird at the old Cape St George lighthouse, a
regular spot for both birds (as well as great views of whales performing out
to sea), White-Cheeked Honeyeater at the Booderee Botanic Gardens and a
Square-tailed Kite at Sanctuary Point on St Georges Basin. Migrants such as
Rufous Fantail and Black-faced Monarch were also seen at the Botanic
Gardens.
We heard the Bristlebird at other locations (Telegraph Creek walk at Green
Patch) and heath off the road to Hyams Beach but no sightings until one flew
over the track near the old lighthouse.
Jervis Bay is a scenic delight, with lots of easy walks and a range of cafes
and restaurants if you need a caffeine hit or you've a mind to eat out. The
large areas set aside as state forests and state and commonwealth national
parks have ensured that it retains its charm as a fairly low-key holiday
destination (although there are some pretty up-market rentals).
