Whilst guiding about four kilometres west of Port Douglas last
Sunday morning we located a flock of nineteen Little Curlews. They were
feeding on dry grassland along with Cattle Egrets and the odd
Straw-necked Ibis.
On the Monday they were still present however they were being
hassled by a Masked Lapwing that had a mate sitting on a nest in the
same paddock. This was of assistance as they were easily overlooked
being a similar colouration to the drying grass. As there seems plenty
of space to move around I would imagine that they may stay put for some
time.
The "Wet" Tropics has be suffering as has the rest of eastern
Australia from lack of moisture since early June with less than 25mm
being recorded locally.
I will be seeing these birds as long as they are around the above
locality and anyone interested can contact me.
