I know this is slightly off-topic but over the past month Gavin Goodyear and
I have noticed higher-than-normal presence of large snakes in our area, NW
of Brisbane.
We have recorded various species but the most obvious are undoubtedly
Eastern Brown and Red-bellied Black Snakes, culminating in a 2-metre Brown
'bailed-up' by our dog under the stairs this afternoon.(probaby reducing my
resident Painted Buttonquail population by three-quarters to one!)
If you are planning a birding-trip to Lake Samsonvale be very careful, Gav
and I have both walked within 2 metres of basking Browns near the location
of the recent reports of Baillon's and Spotless Crakes from Roy Sonnenburg
and Steve Murray.
